Significance

The move follows two weeks of demonstrations as protesters blocked roads to express anger at repeated election delays. With cities suffering food, fuel and medical supply shortages, the government of interim President Jeanine Anez had threatened to remove protesters by force. Anez now seems likely to ratify the new legislation to maintain public order.

Impacts

Roadblocks will have further accentuated the economic recession caused by the COVID-19 lockdown.

External support from the EU and UN will add pressure for the new date to be respected.

US support for the Anez administration is unlikely to waver.
