Significance

IS has long-standing ties with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and is increasingly reaching out to Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), LeJ’s parent organisation. SSP and LeJ seek the extermination of Pakistan’s Shia minority.

Impacts

An uptick in anti-Shia attacks would make it more difficult for Pakistan to pursue rapprochement with Shia-majority Iran.

Many Pakistanis will blame Saudi Arabia for Sunni supremacist violence in the country.

Pakistan’s security forces may crack down on LeJ and SSP.
