Significance
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s Free Democrats (FDP) suffered significant losses. The Greens were among the main winners in both elections, especially in NRW, Germany’s most populous state.
Impacts
The election results will strengthen CDU leader Friedrich Merz's position in the party.
The Greens will push strongly for reforms aimed at making it easier to build new turbines in NRW.
Scholz is unlikely to adopt the Greens' more uncompromising foreign policy, as doing so would face backlash within his own party.
