Significance
Australia was invited to the NATO summit in Madrid on June 29 as an Enhanced Opportunities Partner. While there, Albanese also met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen before seeing French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris as part of an effort to repair bilateral relations.
Impacts
Domestic pressure will force the new Labor government to honour all of its predecessors’ national security obligations.
The restoration of full diplomatic relations with France will remove the main obstacle to closer European ties.
Tensions with China may ease as Australia tones down its hard-line rhetoric, but new Chinese demands could prevent this.
