Significance
The war in Ukraine has highlighted 3SI, a project that aims to raise investment in Central-Eastern Europe, as a means to build resilience on the eastern flank of the EU and NATO. The summit, which included a business forum for participants, unveiled a partnership with Ukraine and made progress in securing US funding for critical infrastructure.
Impacts
Ukraine will eventually join 3SI and may benefit from some of the projects it will be funding.
Energy security concerns will drive forward the expansion and upgrade of gas infrastructure, the United States playing a prominent part.
Having 3SI as an alternative to China’s 16+1 initiative will attract bipartisan support in the United States.
