Significance
It has ambitious plans to produce green energy, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a major component of decarbonising the aviation sector. In June, the US embassy in Cairo hosted a roundtable bringing together representatives of the Egyptian government and US companies to discuss Egypt’s role as a contributor to the SAF market.
Impacts
The infrastructure requirements for SAF production and distribution will present opportunities for the private sector.
SAF-related projects could add momentum to Egypt’s plans to diversify its energy mix and set more binding decarbonisation targets.
Public-private partnerships will test Egypt’s commitment to structural reforms that limit the military’s oversized role in the economy.
