Significance

This occurred less than an hour after the official announcement of Bongo’s victory in the August 26 presidential election. In his place they have established a Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI). They also named Brigadier General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, as junta leader.

Impacts

The coup could inspire others in the region, with Cameroon especially vulnerable.
