Significance
Polls are pointing towards a convincing victory for the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), which is benefiting from the unpopularity of the current government led by the People’s Party (OVP) and Greens, as well as from the economic impact of the war in Ukraine.
Impacts
The popularity of the FPO and others like the Alternative for Germany underscore the domestic implications of Western support for Ukraine.
Like other far-right parties, the FPO has abandoned the idea of leaving the EU and will advocate changing the EU from within.
Austria is unlikely to meet its 2030 EU targets for reductions of emissions.
