Significance
The temple is on land where right-wing groups destroyed a centuries-old mosque in 1992; many Hindus believe the site includes the birthplace of the deity Rama, and that a temple existed there before the mosque. Separately, the next general election is likely to be held in April-May.
Impacts
Hindu nationalist rhetoric will feature heavily in the BJP poll campaign, but the party will also say it is furthering economic development.
Even if it holds together, the INDIA front may fail to agree on seat-sharing in several states, weakening its challenge.
In at least some parts of the country, tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities may rise ahead of the elections.
