Significance
President Xi Jinping has repeatedly cited food security as one of his top strategic priorities. Amid geopolitical tensions and global supply chain disruption, recent years have seen a shift towards increased food -- especially grain -- self-sufficiency in order to reduce dependence on overseas supply sources.
Impacts
Even with buoyant future yield growth, domestic food output will be insufficient to meet the dietary needs of Chinese consumers.
China will remain a major food importer for the foreseeable future, including of soybeans, corn, wheat, barley and rice.
The recent shift towards greater food self-sufficiency may help reduce imports while diversifying overseas sources of supply.
