Significance
The Taliban retaliated against the operation by targeting “several points” in Pakistan, leading to border clashes. Pakistan’s strikes were aimed at the Pakistani Taliban Movement (TTP), an enemy of the Pakistani state that has long relied on Afghan bases. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of inaction on TTP militancy.
Impacts
As the Taliban deepen their engagement with China, they will increasingly count on Beijing to rein in its close partner Islamabad.
The emirate will strengthen economic relations with Iran as part of efforts to mitigate economic pressure from Pakistan.
Given Pakistan-India enmity, the Taliban may try to spite Islamabad by improving relations with Delhi.
