Indonesia-China relations.

Significance

President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has had several high-level exchanges with Chinese officials in the first six months of his presidency. Weeks after his October 2014 inauguration, Jokowi attended the APEC Summit in Beijing, and in March 2015 returned to China for the Boao Forum. In late April, Jokowi held his third meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping who was in Jakarta for the 60th Africa-Asian Summit. The frequency of these visits has triggered speculation that under Jokowi Indonesia is 'tilting' toward China.

Impacts

Jokowi will actively seek Chinese and Japanese infrastructure investment.

Jakarta will advance ASEAN cohesion more for geostrategic reasons than for economic benefit.

Any execution in Indonesia of a Chinese national convicted for drug-trafficking could cause lasting diplomatic damage.
