Subject
Myanmar's elections and economy.
Significance
Myanmar's semi-civilian government has initiated economic reforms designed to attract foreign investment into the formerly closed economy. However, progress has stalled with parliament in recess ahead of landmark national and provincial elections on November 8.
Impacts
The new government will probably be a coalition, but this will require political trade-offs that could slow economic reforms.
Investors will need to build working ties with the new government.
New international economic sanctions are unlikely even if the election is seen internationally as unfair.
If the opposition wins the election, local administrations' support for its new initiatives is not guaranteed.
