Significance
With nearly 100% of votes officially counted, the 'no' campaign to prevent Morales seeking a further term as president in 2019 won by a slim majority of 51.3% to 48.7%. The result reflects growing public weariness with a government now in its tenth year in office, despite striking improvements in living standards over this time.
Impacts
Following a string of electoral defeats, the opposition emerges energised from a 'no' victory.
The MAS government has more than three years to manage a leadership transition.
Whoever emerges, Morales will be a tough act for any successor to follow.
