Significance

The election marked the culmination of six months of sustained tension in the main cities of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Fearing unrest, the government cut telecommunications access between March 20 and 22, sparking widespread criticism.

Impacts

Activist groups such as Amnesty International (which was denied entry to Congo during the poll) will lead global criticism of the regime.

The regime may blame immigrants, notably from Congo-Kinshasa, for stagnating living standards -- as it did in 2014, deporting thousands.

The small number of citizens celebrating the result in the capital (a few hundred) is indicative of antipathy to the regime in major cities.
