Subject
Implications of Ugandan military changes.
Significance
The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) has played a significant role in regional military activities, including the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). A reduction in defence spending, shifting regional political dynamics and President Yoweri Museveni's concerns about his political support at home are reshaping the UPDF with political consequences.
Impacts
Without additional troop commitments, AMISOM could be in jeopardy.
Museveni may rely on the Special Forces Group to quell future protests.
Given direct control of the armed forces, a coup attempt would unlikely seat Museveni but could destabilise the country.
