Corruption investigations touch the president's family.
On September 16, Guatemala's Public Ministry issued an order preventing the son and brother of President Jimmy Morales from leaving the country. The order was in connection with an ongoing investigation into a corruption scandal at the national property registry. Although neither has been charged with any wrongdoing, the investigation is particularly embarrassing for Morales, who has made the fight against corruption the defining issue of his presidency.
The investigation will be scrutinised closely and its unimpeded progress will be key for anti-corruption efforts.
Successful implementation of the ongoing tax authority reform would help to underpin any eventual tax reform.
The CICIG continues to be the main investigatory body in the country, with local agencies yet to develop capability.
