Significance
Coffee production in East Africa increased by 9.9% between 2014-15 and 2015-16, substantially exceeding average global production growth of 0.7%. Higher investment and greater assistance from governments could support increased production in East Africa, though results will vary between countries.
Impacts
Diversification of Ethiopia's economy will reduce coffee's share of total exports.
Many East African countries have a strong tea culture, but rising incomes could grow domestic demand.
Slow production growth in Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam could drive investment to African growing markets.
