Subject
Non-ideological causes of terrorism.
Significance
In the aftermath of a terrorist attack, much of the focus is oriented towards why the individual or group carried out the attack. Typically, these analyses seek answers rooted in ideological motivation, psychological make-up or personal grievance against the target. Such approaches are uninterested in the situational qualities in which terrorist attacks emerge.
Impacts
It is social alienation -- not poverty -- that is associated with terrorism.
Therefore, anti-Muslim rhetoric from right-wing parties in Europe will increase the risk of homegrown jihadis.
The tendency for terrorists to operate in areas they know well raises the importance of intercepting European fighters returning from Syria.
