Significance
Aoun is a former commander of the Lebanese armed forces and a strong ally of Hezbollah, a local Shia political and military grouping, backed by Iran. Following a deal with the Sunni Future Movement, led by former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, he received support from 83 MPs, well above the absolute majority of 65 needed to win.
Impacts
Syrian influence in Lebanon will wane under Aoun's presidency.
The economy will benefit from a short-term boost of optimism.
The new government will prioritise improved service delivery to address popular discontent, especially over waste collection.
