Significance
Donald Trump's campaign statements suggesting he would favour Russia over Ukraine caused consternation in Kyiv. After Trump became US president-elect, the Ukrainian government found itself with no plan for securing essential support in Washington just when conflict resolution is stalled and the government is assailed by critics and political opponents.
Impacts
Reduced US support may complicate lending by the IMF and others, although reform compliance will be the critical factor.
Warmer US-Russian ties will embolden the pro-Moscow Opposition Bloc, although it will be too weak to bring about government change.
Ukraine will come under more pressure from European mediators to fulfil its side of the Minsk 2.0 deal, even on unfavourable terms.
