Significance
It promises to be another tumultuous year in Western Europe, with decisive national elections in the Netherlands in March, France in April and May, and Germany in September. In the wake of the Brexit vote and Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, these will determine whether moderate forces can hold the line and resist the rise of populist nationalism across Western Europe.
