Prospects for China in 2017.
Significance
China heads into 2017 with a slowing economy, mass lay-offs underway and an urgent need to find new sources of growth. Hope and anxiety run high over whether President Xi Jinping will use the power he continues to accumulate to respond effectively. At the same time Beijing faces new levels of hostility in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the prospect of radical geopolitical changes as President-elect Donald Trump takes office in Washington.
