Subject
Prospects for US foreign policy in 2017.
Significance
President-elect Donald Trump's lack of governing experience and campaign trail rhetoric of an 'America First' approach to international affairs have generated significant concern for US allies. They worry that an untested commander-in-chief could upend long-standing relationships, diminish Washington's international engagement, escalate disputes with adversaries and mismanage crises. However, Trump's supporters argue that he will defy Washington foreign-policy 'groupthink' and align US overseas commitments with his domestic priorities.
