Significance

The new government, led by President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo, faces an uphill battle to deliver on its campaign promises. Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo will enter the presidency with a commanding mandate and a parliamentary majority: it is projected that Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) will take 170 seats, compared to the 95 won by Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Impacts

Election promises will drive up government spending, potentially causing tensions with the IMF.

Popular support for the president-elect is likely to fall rapidly if he is unable to deliver on his campaign promises and to create jobs.

The opposition could struggle in opposing the new government in parliament, where the NPP will hold a majority.
