Significance

The drivers of migration for northern Somalis are diverse. In the urban centres of Puntland and Somaliland, two northern regions, many young Somalis are undertaking tahriib -- a term describing the long and precarious journey to Europe. Contrary to common narratives of what prompts migration, these young Somalis are compelled to leave by a diverse range of factors.

Impacts

Loss of assets will make coping with future shocks difficult for households forced into paying off migrants’ debts.

European states will seek ways to stem emigration, but the diversity of drivers presents a significant policy challenge.

Failure to address formal mobility restrictions on young Somalis will perpetuate dangerous migrations.
