Anti-corruption efforts in Thailand.

Significance

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has established an inter-agency steering committee to organise investigations into corruption in Thailand involving foreign companies. The move comes at a time when the junta is trying to demonstrate its resolve in managing a growing number of high-profile corruption cases. Simply enlisting more state agencies in the fight against corruption, however, could further reduce the NACC's autonomy and lead to ineffective competition between agencies.

Impacts

Commercial interests tied to the Shinawatra family may be the first targets of a new anti-graft drive.

Opaqueness within the business environment will rise so long as martial rule continues.

The anti-corruption commission may have lost much of its power permanently.
