Significance

This followed rumours that Saleh was under house arrest and his supporters were fleeing, after clashes with the Huthis resulted in the death of a pro-Saleh army officer. The Huthi-Saleh alliance is fighting an internationally recognised government based in Aden in the south, headed by President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi and backed by a Saudi-led military coalition.

Impacts

Military constraints and international opprobrium may restrain the coalition from attacking the Huthi-held port of Hodeida.

With stalemate on the main battlefronts, the war's costs will become more important in political calculations.

Growing public concern on humanitarian issues is unlikely to stop US and UK government military support to the Saudi-led coalition.
