Israeli Premier Binyamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Latin America.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited Argentina, Colombia and Mexico between September 11-14, the first visit to the region by a sitting Israeli premier. Although former Presidents Haim Herzog and Shimon Peres visited Latin America, relations between the two sides have traditionally been given relatively low priority. The political, economic and security interests linking Israel to Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico differ significantly from country to country.
There may be a follow-up visit to Peru and Brazil in 2018, in particular due to Brazil’s economic and strategic importance.
Netanyahu’s visit may increase economic cooperation in the form of bilateral free-trade agreements and investments.
Intelligence and security cooperation will focus on Colombia, the ‘tri-border’ area of Paraguay and border control in Mexico.
Israel’s security and defence deals in the region (already worth 550 million dollars annually) may rise further.
