Subject
Post-hurricane reconstruction efforts.
Significance
After the Caribbean was hit by Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria swept through the Lesser and Greater Antilles between September 18 and 20, causing significant damage. The total cost of the two hurricanes may well exceed 60 billion dollars.
Impacts
If agreed, new OECD rules allowing catastrophe aid for higher-income countries would help small vulnerable countries and territories.
The political status of some territories may hamper rather than advance reconstruction efforts.
A fall in media concentration on the countries affected may see the urgency given to reconstruction assistance wane.
