Significance
Ramaphosa received the backing of five of nine provinces, while closest rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma received four. However, branch nominations are no guarantee of elective conference success and Dlamini-Zuma has the backing of the largest ANC provincial organisation, KwaZulu-Natal, in addition to the implicit support of potential ‘kingmaker’ Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza.
Impacts
Procedural controversies will persist around the conference and legal challenges both before and after are possible.
If Ramaphosa triumphs, his supporters could push for Zuma’s ‘recall’ as national president next year.
The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) will make further electoral gains, particularly in urban areas, despite its own infighting.
