Fintech advances in Uruguay.

Significance

On November 3, the Uruguayan Central Bank (BCU) presented the so-called ‘e-peso’ plan for a six-month pilot project on the issuance and use of a digital version of the Uruguayan peso. The platform that is introduced in the project will allow person-to-person (P2P) transfers among registered users and electronic payments to businesses and other organisations participating in the programme.

Impacts

Uruguay aims to be in the forefront of fintech regulation in the region.

The country’s relatively strong position in R&D and access to technology should facilitate innovation.

Institutional and infrastructure weaknesses may constrain regional advances in fintech.
