Significance
The pope’s visit came as Chile is becoming increasingly secular and the Catholic Church is regarded as having taken a weak stand on sexual abuse cases and as having lost touch with changing social attitudes, especially among young people.
Impacts
The pope’s visit will not narrow the gap between the conservative local Church hierarchy and the views of the majority.
The process of secularisation in Chilean society is set to continue, with younger people less likely to identify as Catholics.
Emerging issues such as adoption of children by same-sex couples will challenge the Chilean Church.
