Outlook for the agriculture sector.

Significance

The international certification of the School of Veterinary Science at the National University of Asuncion has been removed and its dean of faculty has been suspended following a significant outbreak of brucellosis. The outbreak caused alarm bells in Paraguay, where meat exports are a key element of the booming agricultural economy.

Impacts

The brucellosis outbreak potentially has broader consequences for the key Mercosur meat export sector.

An obligatory vaccination programme will only show results in the medium term.

Agricultural exports are key to avoiding any further drop in Paraguay’s shrinking trade surplus.
