The Scotland Parliament’s rejection of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill.

Significance

On May 15, the Scottish Parliament refused its consent to London’s EU (Withdrawal) Bill by 93 votes to 30. All of Scotland’s major political parties with the exception of the Scottish Conservatives voted to withhold consent.

Impacts

Westminster's pursuit of legal action against Holyrood's EU Continuity Bill will compound public anger over withdrawal.

Sturgeon is likely to announce a push for second independence referendum in the autumn.

Efforts to obstruct or boycott a second vote would complicate matters for Edinburgh but also risk alienating Scots more from London.
