Subject
Prospects for the Gulf states to end-2018.
Significance
The political agenda will be dominated by the determination of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to assert regional hegemonic ambitions against perceived challenges from Iran and Qatar. The other Gulf Arab states will be increasingly worried spectators. Higher oil prices and the prospect of boosting production to compensate for any fall in Iranian output after re-imposed US sanctions will translate into much-improved macroeconomic indicators for most Gulf Arab countries, easing pressure for reform.
