Subject
Mexico-EU free trade deal.
Significance
Mexican and European negotiators in April reached an agreement in principle to update the Mexico-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). EU trade talks have taken on greater urgency for Mexico as it looks to reduce its trade and investment reliance on the United States amid uncertainty over the future of NAFTA.
Impacts
The new deal positions Europe to reap benefits if NAFTA implodes.
The status of Mexico’s energy reforms under the incoming administration could be a flash point for European investors.
Structural issues preventing Mexican firms from becoming more productive are the most serious barrier to expanded trade relations.
