Significance
RENAMO and the second-largest opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) have alleged fraud in several municipalities that FRELIMO won by a narrow margin. Meanwhile, new exploration contracts have been signed and the government’s negotiations with its creditors are entering a critical phase.
Impacts
Dissent from local communities over various resource investments could see several projects delayed.
RENAMO and the MDM may merge or create an electoral pact before the 2019 general elections.
Fears will grow that FRELIMO may replicate recent manipulation efforts in next year’s likely hotly contested polls.
