Subject
Congo's Grand Inga hydropower project.
Significance
Congo’s government announced in October it had signed development agreements with two consortia to develop the next stage of its planned ‘Grand Inga’ dam complex on the Congo River. The project is arguably Africa's highest-profile privately financed hydroelectric project and has been billed as a potentially major driver of continent-wide development. However, the project’s recurrent delays may not yet have been overcome.
Impacts
Questions over who will get Grand Inga’s power will aggravate concerns over its potential to contribute to inclusive development.
Allegations of government corruption may give some investors pause.
Construction will continue to face opposition from social and environmental groups.
