Subject
Paraguay-Brazil relations.
Significance
Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro has indicated that he hopes to create a ‘liberal tide’ in the Southern Cone, together with Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. However, despite ideological affinity, there will be obstacles to Paraguay’s full inclusion in such a grouping.
Impacts
The lopsided nature of bilateral relations will increase Paraguayan worries.
The impact of expanding Brazilian land ownership will drive landlessness, and conflict.
Brazilian drugs gangs may expand further in Paraguay if Bolsonaro’s government cracks down on crime at home.
