Prospects for Brazil in 2019.
Significance
Retired army Captain Jair Bolsonaro will take office on January 1, 2019 as Brazil’s first far-right president since the return of democracy in the 1980s. At the helm of the country, he will have to confront many of the longstanding problems that have fuelled the frustration that helped elect him: widespread corruption, a lukewarm economy, high unemployment, stretched public finances, rampant crime and poor public services.
