Subject
Ebola and insecurity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Significance
Eastern Congo’s Beni Territory has suffered a new spike in deadly attacks in recent months -- including against UN peacekeepers -- amid an intensifying and deadly Ebola crisis.
Impacts
With elections scheduled for late December, insecurity is likely to impact negatively the degree of freedom and fairness at the polls.
Post-electoral armed mobilisation may further destabilise the area, which remains an opposition stronghold.
Clinical trials of new Ebola treatments may provide insights into efficacy but must be replicated across multiple outbreaks to be robust.
