Significance
London Gatwick Airport grounded flights for almost 48 hours in late December due to over 50 drone sightings nearby. Some 1,000 flights were cancelled during the busy Christmas period, the incident underlining the threat posed by drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Impacts
Governments will face pressure to increase penalties for malicious drone usage.
An industry around UAV defence will grow as the need for ground-based defences increases.
The industry in UAV operator insurance will expand.
