Subject
Demands for new provinces in Pakistan.
Significance
Prime Minister Imran Khan late last month said it was a government priority to redress deprivation in southern Punjab province, days after a former prime minister said Khan’s party had reneged on a promise to create a South Punjab province. Separately, the judicial and executive branches of government have in recent months sought to clarify the constitutional status of Gilgit-Baltistan but largely failed to placate the population of the autonomous territory.
Impacts
Islamabad will aim to play down the Gilgit-Baltistan issue, prompting further local resentment.
Southern Punjab is likely to experience more water shortages, worsening deprivation.
Islamabad will seek to centralise more administrative powers.
