Significance
Protesters had blocked road access to the mine for nearly two months, interrupting shipments of mineral to the port of Matarani. The dispute reflected, once again, difficulties facing mining corporations working in Peru’s remote regions.
Impacts
The Catholic Church may emerge as a more active mediator in mining disputes.
State authorities, particularly the mining ministry, are not regarded as impartial actors.
Once violence occurs, it is difficult to regain confidence in relations between communities and mining companies.
Communities' ability to stick to agreements will depend on the support for and legitimacy of those who claim to speak in their name.
