Immigration and foreign labour in Taiwan.

Significance

The New Southbound Policy -- a signature initiative of the current China-sceptic government that aims to make Taiwan’s economy less reliant on mainland China -- includes efforts to attract migrant workers from South-east Asia. Foreign workers in Taiwan now number more than 700,000. They are becoming an increasingly visible and vocal part of society.

Impacts

Taiwan will liberalise its labour market further, out of economic necessity.

Under current political conditions, Taiwan is unlikely to welcome workers from mainland China.

Immigration will become a more controversial issue as foreign labourers press for greater political rights.
