Significance

Macri, who faces a sixth general strike today by the Peronist-dominated General Confederation of Labour (CGT), is under pressure from members of his Cambiemos coalition to incorporate sectors of the Peronist movement into his alliance, as the diffuse movement appears increasingly likely to fall into line behind Fernandez’s candidacy.

Impacts

Increasing voter frustration and falling party affiliation will make it difficult for any party to ‘deliver’ captive votes to any candidate.

Moderate Peronists will hope to have some influence in a new government if they can assist it in reaching power.

Any new government will face enormous challenges and a sour voter mood that will demand rapid and probably impossible improvements.
