The impact of Hurricane Dorian.
Significance
Dorian, a category 5 hurricane and the worst natural disaster in The Bahamas’ history, struck the northern islands at the start of September. Grand Bahama, the Abaco islands and nearby cays felt its full force. Much of the infrastructure on the islands is destroyed, and it is estimated that losses could amount to 5 billion dollars.
Impacts
Dorian’s continuing effects may exacerbate inequality and poverty for Haitian migrants in particular.
The death toll is likely to rise given the large numbers still missing.
The hurricane may prompt renewed scrutiny of the pros and cons associated with cruise-ship tourism.
