Corruption concerns in Honduras.

Significance

The Mission to Support the Fight Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) ceased operations on January 19, following a government decision not to renew its mandate. The move raises concerns about the commitment of President Juan Orlando Hernandez’s government to sustaining anti-corruption efforts. Confidence in the government will probably be further undermined in 2020 by the prospect of new electoral reforms, which are likely to spark protests.

Impacts

As long as Tegucigalpa cooperates with Washington on migration, the latter will overlook domestic issues around impunity.

US support for Hernandez will weaken any international pressure on the government to strengthen anti-corruption efforts.

Security funding will probably be directed more towards migration issues than to strengthening the new anti-corruption unit.
