The consequences of China's growing population of unmarried people.
Significance
A skewed gender ratio, traditional social attitudes and the economic empowerment of women have combined to produce a large and probably growing population of both men and women who are unmarried and childless. The government sees this as an economic and political threat.
Impacts
The large population of unmarried men will sustain demand for trafficked brides.
The wish for child-bearing to increase the future workforce does not imply greater tolerance for unmarried mothers.
The large population of unmarried men with no family support in their old age will increase the fiscal burden of elderly care.
